01 Introduction
Many people in Abu Dhabi learn their blood sugar is raised without having felt unwell. A workplace screening or a routine blood test returns a high HbA1c, and the question becomes where to take it next. Endocare’s center at Al Bateen exists for that appointment, and for the ones that follow it.
02 What our Abu Dhabi diabetes center treats
Patients here search for a diabetic center in Abu Dhabi, others for a diabetes clinic or a diabetologist. All three describe the same thing: a doctor who specializes in blood sugar conditions, and a place set up to manage it.
The center manages four conditions: type 2 diabetes, prediabetes, insulin resistance and hypoglycemia. Your endocrinologist investigates all four on blood tests before deciding any treatment.
Our page on diabetes treatment in the UAE sets out how each one is diagnosed and what the numbers mean, and every condition also has a page of its own.
03 How diabetes care works at our Al Bateen center
An endocrinologist assesses you, orders or reviews your blood tests, and sets a plan. At each visit your endocrinologist asks the same questions of the data: where your HbA1c has moved, what your body composition has done, whether any medication is causing you problems, and what has shifted in your eating, movement and sleep.
That cadence is deliberate. HbA1c itself moves slowly, and the United Kingdom’s National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends measuring it every three to six months until it is stable on unchanging treatment, then every six months. The monthly review is not a monthly blood test. It is where your endocrinologist reads the rest of the picture, which is the part that changes week to week.
Reviews can be done at the center or online, whichever suits you. Our endocrinologists work with a clinical nutritionist and Endocare’s lifestyle coaches inside the same center, so the food and activity side of your plan is built alongside the medical side rather than after it. You can see who makes up our care team before you book.
04 What happens at your first visit to the Abu Dhabi center
Endocare strongly prefers a first visit in person. Your endocrinologist examines you, asks about your own and your family’s history, and works through your existing results with you.
Your endocrinologist needs a blood test performed within the last three months before prescribing medication. If yours is older, Endocare can arrange a blood draw at your home.
A body composition analysis forms part of the visit. Visceral fat, which sits around the organs inside the abdomen, drives insulin resistance, and a weighing scale cannot measure it. The scan separates fat from muscle and water, and reports a visceral fat rating your endocrinologist can track. It is included free of charge with every consultation, for every patient, on every visit.
05 How is diabetes screened for in Abu Dhabi?
Abu Dhabi has screened its population for diabetes for well over a decade. The Department of Health runs the Weqaya program, and researchers validated HbA1c as a population screening test in Abu Dhabi nationals in Diabetes Care in 2011. A workplace or wellness screening is the other common route, and a raised result from either is a reason to see an endocrinologist rather than wait a year and repeat the test.
The scale is the reason the program exists. The International Diabetes Federation puts adult diabetes prevalence in the UAE at 20.7%, about 1,274,200 adults, in its 2024 estimate.
Screening matters here because the condition builds quietly. A population study of Abu Dhabi residents followed 6,772 adults who had no diabetes at the start, and 643 of them developed type 2 diabetes over an average of 9.2 years. The authors found HbA1c at the start was the strongest predictor, with smoking, higher body mass index and lower HDL cholesterol also predicting the outcome.

08 What a smaller diabetes center offers
Abu Dhabi has large and well-established diabetes centers, and they do a great deal a small specialist practice does not attempt. A smaller center offers something different.
At Al Bateen, one endocrinologist holds your case from the first appointment onward. They read your blood tests and your body composition together, in the same visit, and revise the plan on what those show. An endocrinologist, a diabetologist, or a general practitioner specialized in metabolic health can each manage diabetes properly.
The pill wins on no needles and no cold storage. The injection wins on flexibility, since timing is far less strict. Foundayo is another tablet option with its own profile. None of them is automatically best; they are simply different tools, and the right one depends on you.
